Across Northern CA to Shasta Dam (February 2005)
Driving in through light snow and slush, I arrived at the summit of Willamette Pass. I had actually purchased tire chains for this trip, but the snow and road conditions weren't bad enough to use them. Maybe next time.

The Pass is also the home to a small ski area.

A few hours later I was on the backside of the Cascades, down US 97 to Klamath Falls, and then over the border to the real gem of the trip: CA 161. It basically runs parallel to the state line and the turnoff is about 25 feet south of the border crossing.

About halfway along 161 there is a nice roadside pullout to experience the Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge. This is looking south at Lower Klamath Lake.

Continuing westward along CA 161. I was one of about five cars travelling in either direction that day at that time.

CA 161 ends at US 97, on an upslope, and presents a nice opportunity to look back over the valley.

US 97 takes you through the Butte Valley, a high-country valley in far northern Siskiyou county. It also runs right near Mt. Shasta. As you can see, there's a spectacular view point turnout.

The second desolate road picture. I particularly like this one, not least because a very large tractor trailer truck was bearing down on me at this moment. Run! Hurry!

Aside from CA 161, I also wanted to get CA 265. A strange little thing, 265 runs for about half a mile in Weed, CA. Apparently, it used to be part of old US 99.

Here's the other end of CA 265, looking east with Mt. Shasta in the background. What an amazing mountain...

Just below CA 265 lies a railroad track. I quite like this view of the rails.

Moving on down I-5, I saw signs for Shasta Dam. The road to Shasta Dam is also on CA 151, so of course I had to go to the dam.

The small and somewhat disappointing Visitor Center. In the realm of dam Visitor Centers, this is the least impressive. Ironic since the dam is the largest in California.

...That you can walk along. This is actually looking eastward across Shasta Lake. Very quiet on this day because of the rain.

Several years ago the Bureau of Reclamation was charged with the task of managing the water outflow from the dam/powerhouse to lower salmon spawning and fishkill problems downriver. So they built this huge system of gates that allows them to capture water at different temperatures depending on the time of year to help the salmon. And they basically bolted it to the backside of the dam. Pretty cool!
